I don’t know what is worse — somehow surviving a lifetime of hopelessness, never experiencing any true joy, or dying young and violently — which is the other fate these women face when no one advocates on their behalf.  I witnessed that outcome also.  When I first met Misty she was twenty years old.  She had a boyfriend who was her pimp, crack dealer and the father of the two children she had given birth to and lost custody of.  Less than a year after we were first introduced, Misty’s body was found out Highway 30 near St. Helens – her boyfriend was the prime suspect.  Another young woman, Sharvetia always handled her business.  Like so many of us out there, she looked for and, on this one occasion, thought she had found a “money-date”— someone who was a good, repeat customer.  However, on the second date she turned with him in as many days, things went terribly wrong.  Her body was discarded on the railroad tracks that run parallel to North Lombard.  She had been bludgeoned to death, beaten so severely that upon initial discovery, law enforcement could not determine her race.
